- Hmmm, I'm using an internal 14k4 modem in my Linux PC and an externel
- 28k8 modem with OS/2 Warp Connect. I know the positive and negative
- aspects of both internal and external modems.
- Plus on internal:
- - no separate power support
- - no seperate 16550A if there is no-one on an I/O card
- - less cable wiring on the computer's back ( :-) )
-
- Plus on external:
- - you can reset the modem without having to reset the computer (I had
- problems with Win 3.0: Win disabled the modem so it was dead until the
- computer was switched off and on again!)
- - you have lights on all operating systems (Linux, OS/2 ...)
- - no slot is used. I've a multi I/O card with 16550As on it and
- bi-directional parallel port, E-IDE ... why should I use an internal
- modem because of a 16550A I've got already!
-
- I think the "buy whatever you think it's right for your belongings" is
- absolutely correct. I don't think one should decide the question for
- others since it depends on the situation, when an internal modem is
- better than an external and vise-versa.
